What does Infineon do?

Infineon, based near Munich, is Germany’s largest chipmaker. It doesn’t make computer processors. Instead it focuses on power semiconductors: chips that switch and control electricity efficiently. You find them in cars, charging stations, solar systems and, more and more, in the power supply of AI data centers. Infineon was spun off from Siemens in 1999.

Where you know it from

Almost every new car contains Infineon chips, for things like airbags, power windows and engine control. Many bank cards also use Infineon security chips.

Strengths

  • A global leader in automotive chips and power semiconductors.
  • Grows with electric cars, renewable energy and AI data centers.
  • Runs its own factories in Europe and Asia, including a large new plant in Dresden.

Risks

  • The chip business is highly cyclical, and revenue dipped slightly in fiscal 2025.
  • Half of its revenue depends on the car industry, which is currently weak.
  • Growing competition from China and a weak US dollar weigh on results.
