Frühstart-Rente: 10 euros a month from the state for children

Germany plans to invest 10 euros a month for every child from age six. By the 18th birthday that adds up to 1,440 euros. What is planned, what is still open and what the big headline numbers really mean.

Status: Draft law: cabinet 12 Aug 2026, Bundestag first reading 25 Sep 2026 (Drs. 21/7864), not yet passed. Planned start 1 Jan 2027, backdated to 2026.

In short

As of 5 October 2026

The Frühstart-Rente (early-start pension) is a planned German government programme. For every child whose main residence is in Germany, the state pays 10 euros a month from the 6th to the 18th birthday into a retirement account, 1,440 euros in total. The money is invested in the capital market and is generally locked until age 65. The law has not been passed yet.

Simplified, without costs or taxes. The return is an assumption, not a forecast. Large end values come mainly from the many years until payout.

The idea

Starting early buys you time. That is the whole point of the Frühstart-Rente. From a child's sixth birthday, the state pays 10 euros a month into a retirement contract. The money is invested in funds and is meant to grow until retirement. The government has two goals: a small head start for retirement savings, and early hands-on experience with investing for children and parents.

Who is meant to get it

Children qualify once they turn 6, until they turn 18, if their main residence is registered in Germany. They need a German tax ID. It starts with children born in 2020, who turn six in 2026. Each year the next birth year joins. Older children can have a contract, but without state money. Payments stop in the month before the 18th birthday, or earlier if the child no longer lives in Germany.

1,440 €

Total the state pays per child: 10 euros times 144 months, from the 6th to the 18th birthday.

Where the money goes

If parents open a standard depot (Standarddepot) for their child, the 10 euros go straight into it. This is a certified retirement account with two funds and effective costs capped at 1.0 %. Until the 18th birthday no acquisition or sales costs may be charged. If parents do nothing, the state invests the money collectively. A special federal fund is set up in 2028 and the Bundesbank invests it globally diversified. The child can later claim their share, including gains, into their own contract by their 35th birthday at the latest. After that the claim lapses.

What parents can add

Parents, grandparents or the child can pay in extra, up to 6,840 euros a year. These top-ups get no state subsidy and parents cannot deduct them from tax. According to the bill's explanatory notes, own top-ups and their gains can be withdrawn under the contract terms. The state's 10 euros and their gains, however, stay locked until retirement. They cannot be sold, pledged or seized by creditors.

At 18 and after

State payments end at the 18th birthday, but the money stays invested. From then on the whole Frühstart balance can be moved to another certified retirement contract, for example the young adult's own Altersvorsorgedepot. There they can keep saving and receive the regular subsidy if they are eligible. The money is generally available only from 65. One exception is a home they live in, under the rules for subsidised retirement savings.

A small snowball rolls down a very long slope. 10 euros a month is little, but it has almost 60 years to grow through compound interest.

Do 10 euros really turn into 53,000 euros?

Headlines mention sums around 53,000 euros. That is not a promise, it is a calculation built on assumptions. We checked: 10 euros a month from age 6 to 18, then left untouched until 65. You only reach about 53,000 euros with 7 % return a year after costs, every year, for 59 years. At 5 % it is about 19,000 euros, at 3 % about 7,000 euros. These are also euros from around 2085. With 2 % inflation, 53,000 euros would buy only about what 16,500 euros buy today. And payouts are taxed.

Tax

The state's 10 euros do not count as income. Gains inside the contract are tax-free until payouts begin. In retirement the payouts are then taxed at the personal income tax rate under § 22 No. 5 EStG. This is the same logic as the Altersvorsorgedepot for adults.

Nothing is final yet. The Bundesrat proposed changes on 25 Sep 2026 and the government will review several of them. Amounts, age limits and procedures may still change in the Bundestag. We will update this page once the law is passed.

Frequently asked questions

Do we as parents have to do anything?

Not necessarily. Without a contract, the state invests the 10 euros a month collectively for your child. If you open a certified standard depot in your child's name, the money goes straight there. The provider then applies for the Frühstart-Rente with the central subsidy office.

Will 10 euros a month really become 53,000 euros?

Only under favourable assumptions. About 53,000 euros at 65 requires 7 % return a year after costs for 59 years. At 5 % it would be about 19,000 euros. Inflation and tax are not deducted. Nobody can promise that return, and the law guarantees no performance.

Can my child access the money at 18?

No. The state payments and their gains can generally be paid out only as retirement income from 65. At 18 the balance can only be moved in full to another certified retirement contract.

Does my child get money if born before 2020?

Not under the draft. The Frühstart-Rente starts with children born in 2020. Older children under 18 may have a contract, but without state payments.

What does the contract cost?

Until the 18th birthday no acquisition or sales costs may be charged. The standard depot has a legal cap of 1.0 % effective costs a year. For the pooled investment, the bill says the costs passed on should reduce returns by less than one percentage point.

What happens if we move abroad?

A main residence in Germany is required. If it ends, payments stop at the end of that month. Whatever has been saved remains retirement savings under the rules for subsidised pensions.

What if we never open a contract?

Your child's share stays in the pooled investment. Your child can move it, including gains, into their own retirement contract until their 35th birthday. If no contract is opened by then, the money goes back to the federal budget.
