As of 5 Oct 2026, 16:51What does Hochtief do?
Essen-based Hochtief plans and builds large projects: office towers, hospitals, stadiums, tunnels and, more and more often, data centers for cloud and AI. Most of its revenue comes from its US subsidiary Turner, followed by CIMIC in Australia. Its German business is comparatively small. The majority owner is the Spanish construction group ACS.
Hochtief was the main contractor for Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie and has built many bridges, tunnels and high-rises across Germany.

Strengths
- A record order backlog of around €72.5 billion at the end of 2025.
- Strong in building data centers, which make up about a fifth of the order backlog.
- Its 20% stake in motorway operator Abertis adds extra income from toll roads.
Risks
- Construction leaves only thin profit margins, and mistakes on big projects quickly get expensive.
- Heavy reliance on the US, including the dollar exchange rate.
- If the data center boom cools, important orders would be hit.
