DAX
Germany's benchmark index, made up of the 40 largest listed German companies.
The DAX (Deutscher Aktienindex) tracks how Germany's 40 largest listed companies perform together, for example SAP, Siemens, Allianz and Mercedes-Benz. Until September 2021 it had 30 members.
Companies are weighted by the market value of their freely traded shares, so big firms move the index more. The DAX is a performance index: dividends are counted as reinvested.
Example: if the DAX rises 1 % in a day, the 40 stocks gained 1 % on a weighted average. Some individual stocks may still have fallen.
