What does Brenntag do?

Essen-based Brenntag makes very little itself. It buys chemicals in bulk from producers such as BASF, stores, blends and repackages them, and delivers them to more than 190,000 customers, from food and cosmetics makers to water utilities and paint producers. Think of it as a wholesaler for chemistry.

Where you know it from

You almost never see Brenntag directly: it supplies makers of food, cosmetics and cleaning products behind the scenes.

How Brenntag makes money

  • Standard chemicals68 %
  • Specialty chemicals (food, pharma, cosmetics, coatings)32 %
Revenue share 2025

Strengths

  • The world’s largest chemical distributor, with about 600 sites in more than 70 countries.
  • A huge number of customers across very different industries spreads the risk.
  • The business needs few expensive factories and generates cash reliably.

Risks

  • It depends on industrial demand: sales fell 6.6 percent in 2025 to about 15.2 billion euros.
  • Cheap exports from China push down prices for standard chemicals.
  • A large cost-cutting programme runs until 2027, and it is not yet clear whether it will work as planned.
